To appreciate nature is to fundamentally appreciate the interconnected web of life and all its diversity. As climate disruption and the feedback loops from climate change intensify, touching literally every place and all living things on the planet, more people are coming to realize that the root causes of climate change and environmental degradation are connected. So are the solutions. By bringing an intersectional approach to our work and explicitly addressing the connections between the human and natural environment, and the need for social, economic, and environmental justice and a healthy, functioning democracy, we are seeing the power of transformative change.

Two years into the “Decisive Decade” to avert a 1.5 degree Celsius rise in global temperature by 2030, only with significant and sustained changes can we stave off the dire consequences of climate change. People working for nature, in nature, and with nature are powerful enough to make these changes. Our 2021 annual report: People and Nature, Powerful Together celebrates our growing movement to create a thriving planet with safe and healthy communities where everyone and all life can flourish.

With time running out for humanity to transition to a clean energy economy and avoid the worst impacts of and irreparable damage from climate change, 2021 - despite attacks on our democracy and increasing climate volatility - saw us leveraging all of the tools we have at our disposal to build a more just, equitable, and sustainable future. From the Sierra Club programs that we fiscally sponsored and funded; to how we invested our assets consistent with our values and mission; to how we leveraged and supported partnerships that understand and act on the interconnections of environmental protection, racial justice, environmental justice, public health, climate change, and clean energy solutions, the accomplishments and lessons learned in 2021 will endure and inform our work going forward. People and nature are truly powerful together!
