Outdoors for All

Building the movement, one trek at a time.

Outdoors for All

Through local outings, conservation education, and leadership training, Outdoors for All programs ensure that each new generation stays in touch with nature and learns the importance of protecting it for the next generation. By supporting Sierra Club’s Outdoors for All, the Foundation is building a stronger, healthier, more inclusive environmental movement. Getting outdoors is good for all of us.

Inspiring Connections Outdoors Program

The Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) Program promotes appreciation for and protection of the natural environment, creating opportunities for personal development through outdoor adventures, leadership training, and environmental education for people who might not otherwise have the opportunity. 44 local Inspiring Connections Outdoors groups lead over 800 outings a year in cities across the country from San Jose, California to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. These groups cumulatively get 13,000 people outside each year.

Military Outdoors

Outdoors for All, through the Sierra Club’s Military Outdoors program, brings over 5,000 service members, veterans, and their family members outside every year. In addition to increasing physical activity, outdoor recreation can improve academic performance, reduce stress and anxiety, and even mitigate the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury in veterans returning from active service. Through partnership with The Great Outdoors Lab, a collaboration with REI and the University of California, Berkeley, Military Outdoors has helped document the biological and emotional effects of spending time outdoors.
